Perfectly placed in the island landscape, the dammusi of Pantelleria was born as a rural home, and their construction has always taken into account the wind, the warmth, the scarcity of rains and the richness of lava rocks. All the building elements have a specific function: dome roofs are used to collect rainwater and convey it into tanks; thick walls, guarantee the insulation against summer heat and cold in winter, along with the small dimensions of doors and windows. Almost alongside a dammuso, there is the “pantesco” garden, a circular building in which there is only one fruit tree, usually a citrus, protected by the island’s wind. Turn the island long and wide, discover ancient dammusi, or take advantage of one of the many organized tours.
